Valencia wasn’t a city that sprung to everyone’s mind when thinking of Spain until over the last decade. Before that tourists were flocking to the surreal architecture of Barcelona and the art galleries of Madrid. But things have changed and ever since the largest urban complex in Europe was built here, the world has begun to take a little more notice of this city on the Costa Brava.

Valencia has an extremely Mediterranean feel to it, more so than other Spanish cities. This is largely due to the fact that it was founded by the Romans in 137 BC and was later a Roman military. Two of the city’s original gates still stand today, but the city has expanded somewhat since those stones were laid.

Today Valencia is Spain’s third largest city, yet is still a relative newcomer with those travelling around the Iberian country. Exploring the city centre in a day is utterly achievable yet, just like with most cities, you should devote more than two to appreciate it fully.
